Hydrogen combustor materials — a grown-up roundtable

A closed, unshowy working group on liner alloys, coatings and the things that crack when the flame is too keen.

Hydrogen changes the flame; the metal has not been consulted. This collaboration is for groups who already have data or a test article, not a slogan.

We will meet quarterly, share failure photographs like adults, and publish a short note when there is something worth saying.

The specific problem is that hydrogen combustion alters flame speed, flame position and the local heat flux, and consequently the thermal gradients that liner materials and thermal barrier coatings experience. A great many organisations are discovering this independently and at some expense. Pooling the failure data is cheaper than each party rediscovering the same coating spallation mechanism.

Membership is deliberately small and deliberately technical. Attendees are expected to be people who have run a rig, not people who manage people who have run a rig. This is not a slight on management; it is simply a different meeting.

How it runs

The mechanics, stated plainly.

  • Quarterly closed sessions

A half-day, in person, in Derby. No presentations longer than fifteen minutes, and at least half the time reserved for discussion of things that failed.

  • A shared failure record

Participants contribute anonymised failure observations to a common record, held under agreement and visible only to members.

  • An annual public note

Once a year the group publishes a short technical note on anything it has established that is not commercially sensitive. Brief by design.

What you provide

  • Data, a test article, or genuine operating experience with hydrogen combustion
  • A named technical participant who attends consistently
  • Willingness to describe a failure accurately in front of competitors
  • Agreement to the confidentiality terms before the first session

What you get

  • Access to the pooled failure record and the interpretation that goes with it
  • Early sight of coating and alloy behaviour that others have paid to learn
  • Introductions to materials groups working on this specific problem
  • A shorter route to knowing which of your risks are real

Terms

Agreed before anybody contributes anything, which is the only moment it works.

  • Participation is under a mutual confidentiality agreement covering the shared record
  • Contributed data remains the property of the contributor
  • Anything published requires the consent of every party whose data informs it
  • Members may withdraw, and their contributed data is then withheld from future circulation
